PURPOSE |

The United Support Group is a non-profit organization founded in 1989 for the purpose of providing social and recreational activities for persons with mental retardation residing in Lancaster county. Our programs are designed to enhance the quality of life of our members. We offer both year-round activities and special seasonal events. Day and weekend trips are planned periodically throughout the year. All of our programs are dedicated to encourage independence with loving support. In addition to adult recreation, the USG also offers a Summer Day Camp for school-aged children and young adults (ages 5-21) with mental retardation, regardless of their functioning level. This unique program offers a variety of activities, all under the direct care of our trained staff. For recreational needs during the school year, the USG offers an After School Program. This one-of-a-kind program was designed at the request of Lancaster County MH/MR for children ages 13 to 21. The Afterschool Program provides social and recreational opportunities to its participants as well as a source of short-term respite for working parents. |
PROGRAMSArts & Crafts One of our most popular programs-- Arts & Crafts is designed to encourage creative expression. Particicpants enjoy creating quality crafts while spending time with friends. Regular Bingo Bingo is another of our most popular activities. Players enjoy friendly competition and more importantly, everyone leaves a winner! Coffeehouse (twice monthly) This program is the highlight of the week. Participants meet on the 1st and 3rd Thursday of each month for dancing and socializing. Refreshments are available, and all the latest tunes and old favorites by our own USG DJ keep the crowd moving. A special Christmas coffeehouse in early December rings in the joy of the holiday season. Movie Night Another crowd pleaser, Movie Night offers fun and relaxation with friends. All the latest and greatest hits are shown on our 72" big-screen television. Refreshments are served. Miniature Golf (seasonal) Miniature golf is offered in the summer months and provides fun outdoor recreation. Participants are challenged to conquer the course and score a "hole-in-one". The Extras Members receive a quarterly newsletter filled with information about planned events, past program highlights, member birthday listings, and an administrator's report. the newsletter also contains a calendar of upcoming activities. |
Each summer our members and their famies join at a local park for the USG Annual Picinic. Music, great food, and outdoor games make it a memorable day. Autumn is welcomed each October with an old-fashioned hayride, complete with a toasty bonfire. S'mores, hot dogs, and hot chocolate make the evening perfect. Most programs require a small fee to cover the cost of the facility or supplies. USG members enjoy reduced rates. All programs costs, dates, and times are published in our newsletter. Membership is open to anyone interested in improving the lives of persons with mental retardation. Membership provides an opportunity to promote community interaction and awareness which benefits all who participate. |
